Project Update: Modernising a leading Manchester college
You may remember that we reported on a rather exciting ongoing project at the beginning of April. At the time we had to keep the full details under our hat, but now that the project has evolved into a spectacular space, we’re thrilled to share images of the finished outcome here on the blog.
The project in question was a high-impact new reception space for Ashton Sixth Form College. With a reputation as one of the leading sixth forms in the North West, creating a space which would reflect the college’s commitment to growth and progression was a primary consideration when devising the new design.
The new reception space is essentially a modern annex set aside the existing college building. Designed by Manchester-based architects GA Studio, the new reception is designed to be visually high impact, with a ‘fin’ like construction creating glass partitions and allowing for natural light to flow into the plan.
Lomax Interiors designed and manufactured the reception desk for the new space, with the design beginning in our own workshop before being moved to the college for installation.
The simple, yet technically difficult, clean angular shape was pre-fabricated in our workshop to facilitate a fast installation programme.
With the space being so minimalist, the desk needed to be visually impactful and functional, both complementing the space and acting as a focal point for students and visitors.
The desk spans an impressive 8.5 metres and incorporates features designed to assist people with disabilities. The front of the reception and counter top are crafted from LG Hi Macs solid surface material with seamless joints to achieve a smooth, flowing effect. The rear of the desk is a white textured finish with a durable ABS edging applied.
To make the most out of the powerful angular shape, efficient LED lighting is fitted to the underside of the counter and staff computers are cleverly disguised in order to maintain a clean finish.

Ashton Sixth Form College now offers a range of higher education courses with Bachelor’s degrees, Foundation degrees and Postgraduate Certificates included in the prospectus. As a result, it is imperative that the college can compete with universities in the services, resources and overall image it offers to students. The new reception area achieves this progressive vision for the college and mimics the style and grandeur expected at universities.
GA Studio are currently working on plans for a new student space at the college, with artist impressions of the building in context available on their website.
We look forward to seeing how students and staff respond to the space in the coming months and we’ll continue to keep you updated on our recent projects (look out for an exciting bar installation over the next few weeks!)
